Mike always took his things to school in a backpack, so Anthony knew that was the key to getting inside the school. Instead of taking Mike home after school, Anthony whisked him back inside for their meeting with the principal. The boy was confused, but he couldn’t say no to his father. The three of them sat in silence while they waited for Clive to join them. There was some tension in the air, but Anthony was sure that he would soon clear everything up. When Clive finally arrived, he seemed stunned to find himself back in a room with Anthony again.
Ready to begin, Anthony pulled out the tape recorder which held the answer to the question that had plagued him ever since Mike first came home from school hungry.
The Truth
Anthony hit play, and they all sat back to listen. Mike and Clive’s recorded voices filled the room, revealing exactly what had been going on all along. Though it was an unexpected truth, it was still a shock. Anthony could only sit back and remind himself that he’d been right to dig for the truth because there was something going on and nobody else had wanted to hear it. Now, he’d make them listen.
The truth did indeed relate to Mike’s missing lunches. That situation had always been odd, but Anthony hadn’t been able to put his finger on what was wrong until now.
